I absolutely LOVED this series。 When I first watched Attack on Titan， it felt very futile and needlessly violent。 I had a really hard time watching it。 But as the story develops， it becomes more HUMAN。 It deals with suffering， grief， trauma， hope， beauty。 It is true to how human beings are with one another - it has wonderfully fleshed out politics， emotions， character development， and plot - IF you can stomach all of the death and destruction。 And that’s coming from somebody who has only watched I absolutely LOVED this series。 When I first watched Attack on Titan， it felt very futile and needlessly violent。 I had a really hard time watching it。 But as the story develops， it becomes more HUMAN。 It deals with suffering， grief， trauma， hope， beauty。 It is true to how human beings are with one another - it has wonderfully fleshed out politics， emotions， character development， and plot - IF you can stomach all of the death and destruction。 And that’s coming from somebody who has only watched the show。 Don’t worry - the manga is on my list。 But I wanted to read the story in order， so I started here。 Before the Fall answers a lot of unanswered questions - what has the political spectrum behind the walls looked like， and how did it lead to the current political decay in the story？ How were anti-titan weapons created？ What does life look like behind the walls for people who aren’t military？ How do certain cults and factions come to be - the titan worshippers and wall worshippers？ Etc。 Come prepared: if you read Isayama first， this story will feel jarring。 It’s sanctioned by Isayama and Kodansha， but it’s written and drawn by other creators。 It’s all canon， but it’s stylistically different。 Personally， this didn’t bother me at all。 If you allow it to， Before the Fall’s intellectual tackling of the ODM development， the history of the Survey Core， the nuances of conservative and reformist wall politics， and other intrigue and mystery will thrill you。 More importantly， though， the story deals with themes of belonging。 The danger of dehumanizing others。 The need for the strongest hope of humanity to rest in love and not anger - in care and not vengeance。 Nothing against Eren Jaeger， who is who he is for a reason - but the main character here， Kuklo， stands in stark contrast。 Rather than themes of kill or be killed， the world is cruel， lose your humanity to fight， etc。 Before the Fall centers on themes of family， love， and emotion - all in a soft boy！ I love a male character who is true to his feelings。 I’m also a sucker for a good “shoujo” ending - and let’s face it - somewhere in this dismal tale of gloom and doom， SOME characters deserve to just win and be happy， right？ Overall， this story will surprise you with its sweetness， and likely give you a breath of fresh air and hope before you dive into Attack on Titan true and all your precious babies die left and right。 Good luck out there！ 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it， click here。 This was a pretty good volume！ We pick up with two guys named Solm and Carlo who discover that the titan worshippers led by some Elena-san are waiting for a titan to come and devour them because zealots and then a titan does do that and spits them back up， but what they find is a human child survived and scared that its a titan， they imprison him since childhood until he is bought by a man named Dario who has brought him for his son Shakii to beat him to make the latter feel superior as he is to This was a pretty good volume！ We pick up with two guys named Solm and Carlo who discover that the titan worshippers led by some Elena-san are waiting for a titan to come and devour them because zealots and then a titan does do that and spits them back up， but what they find is a human child survived and scared that its a titan， they imprison him since childhood until he is bought by a man named Dario who has brought him for his son Shakii to beat him to make the latter feel superior as he is to join the Training corps， meanwhile we have his daughter Charlies first tryna kill this titan-child KYUKURO until she sees he is just like them and they befriend each other and things happen， she teaches him until 2 years later when his use is finished as Shakii has achieved his purposes， and both plan to escape。 It was a great volume and introduces us to a world 70 years ago before the fall of Wall Maria， the art in it is so good。 。。。more

This is a review of the entire series。Cut from a titan's stomach after his cultist mother was eaten alive when he was still growing inside her womb， Kuklo bore the cursed reputation of being the son of a titan。 He was locked in a cage as a toddler and treated as a circus freak to be paraded around。 After years of abuse on the streets he was sold to the Inocencio royal family to become the plaything of their cruel son Xavi。 Never taught how to speak or shown the love of another human being， Kuklo This is a review of the entire series。Cut from a titan's stomach after his cultist mother was eaten alive when he was still growing inside her womb， Kuklo bore the cursed reputation of being the son of a titan。 He was locked in a cage as a toddler and treated as a circus freak to be paraded around。 After years of abuse on the streets he was sold to the Inocencio royal family to become the plaything of their cruel son Xavi。 Never taught how to speak or shown the love of another human being， Kuklo's life seemed destined to meet a gloomy end。 That was until Sharle， the daughter of the Inocencio family visits him in his cell one fateful night and teaches him the warmth of another person。Before the Fall takes a very different approach to storytelling than the main series。 The high stakes action， intricate world-building， thrilling political undertones， masterful use of mystery and foreshadowing aren't really anywhere to be seen here。 That's not to say the prequel is bad， it just tells a much more personal and self-contained narrative that serves to flesh out the lesser explored elements of the main series such as who was the first person to ever kill a titan， how the survey corps were formed and how the three dimensional odm gear they use to kill titans was invented。The star of the manga in my opinion was Sharle。 She threw away a life of luxury and safety to save Kuklo and rebel against the cruelty of her own royal family。 She constantly puts herself in danger to confront the horrors of the titans， corrupt royals and rogue criminals。 She uses her well-educated background to enlist herself in the service of a group of underground blacksmiths in order to improve their methods and create the technological foundation of the military gear that would go on to give humans a fighting chance against the titans。 She was the backbone of the whole narrative and her influence had the biggest impact on the events of the main series。 If not for her efforts， none of the characters in the main series would've ever had the means to survive。 I also just really enjoyed her personality， the way she never discriminates against the lesser class and how she breaks free from the chains of her royal upbringing。Kuklo was a decent character， but after he meets Sharle he mostly just feels like a generic Shounen protagonist。 He's not bad， just mundane and doesn't really fit in with the overall complex cast， especially next to the secondary protagonist Sharle who ended up accomplishing so much。 Some of the world-building doesn't line up with the main series such as titans being able to walk at night and them disappearing the second they're killed， but most of the inconsistencies were minor things that weren't enough to completely destroy the immersion。 The limited scope of the plot and setting also made the pacing feel somewhat tedious at times because most of the drama is never taken beyond the walls of the cities， but it also made room for more personal time between the characters living out their daily lives together and really learning to put their heads together to help form a better world for humanity's last survivors。Not nearly as good as the main series and it doesn't add that much to the world or overall story， but it's an enjoyable side story that gives you a better understanding of the basics regarding daily life in the walled cities and how the foundations of military power and titan-fighting capabilities came to be。 It probably won't appeal to casual readers of the series， but it might be worth checking out if you're already a diehard fan of Attack on Titan。***My Social MediaMy YouTube Channel: https://www。youtube。com/channel/UCPPs。。。My Instagram Account: https://www。instagram。com/michael_sor。。。My Wattpad Account: https://www。wattpad。com/user/Michael-。。。My Twitter Account: https://twitter。com/SorbelloHorrorMy Facebook Account: https://www。facebook。com/michael。sorb。。。 。。。more

Entertaining， but little else， is what can be said of this first volume of the "Attack on Titan" *sic prequel。 Instead of the fights with the titans and the military， this spin-off seems centered on a young man who was born after her mother had been eaten by a titan and the young woman whose family buys the 'monster'。 It is all a little bit been-there-seen-that， with the caring young woman， her mean brother， and the 'monster' who is not a monster and there is not much depth to the story （in this Entertaining， but little else， is what can be said of this first volume of the "Attack on Titan" *sic prequel。 Instead of the fights with the titans and the military， this spin-off seems centered on a young man who was born after her mother had been eaten by a titan and the young woman whose family buys the 'monster'。 It is all a little bit been-there-seen-that， with the caring young woman， her mean brother， and the 'monster' who is not a monster and there is not much depth to the story （in this first volume）。 But the set up is interesting enough to read one or two more volumes and see where the story goes。The artwork is quite different from the main story series， with many cute faces and little of the bedraggled， angry and hungry characters that dominate the former。 It is a little bit too cute。6/10（Spanish translation by Olinda Cordukes） 。。。more
